Late last year, Genesis announced the upcoming G70 model. The last of the planned Genesis sedans, this luxury sports sedan seems to be based off the Kia Stinger GT… But is that a bad thing?

Genesis has already stated that the G70 will have three sedan models – the G90 dropped in 2017, the G80 in 2018 and the G70 is expected to be a 2019 model year, dropping sometime in late ’18 or early ‘19.

Meanwhile, the Kia Stinger GT is already turning heads in the automotive industry, with many exclaiming the fun they’ve had in these rear-wheel drive, turbocharged sedans. Powered by the Lambda II, 3.3-L turbocharged V6 creating 365-hp, the Kia Stinger GT is a great starting point for the newest in Genesis’ luxury lineup.

“At Genesis, we shape fascination and desire with the passion, dedication and talent from our designers. We modulated all parameters from the Genesis DNA to tailor a sports sedan,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Genesis Design. “This challenge required the highest skills and know-how. The G70 is designed to captivate all senses with its sensuous and tensioned muscular volumes.”

Higher model trims will come with launch control, torque vectoring, a mechanical LSD, is expected to have a 4.7-second zero to 60 acceleration, and Brembo brakes. Base G70’s will have the 2.0-L twin-scroll, turbocharged inline 4-cylinders that base Stinger’s have, while overseas markets will get a diesel engine.

From the spy photos, we can see that the majority of the exterior design has remained the same, with changes at both bumpers. Even the undercarriage hosts many of the beefier, performance-oriented parts of the Stinger GT.

Just like the Kia Stinger GT, the G70 is set to be driver-oriented – though the Genesis arguably more leather-filled right off the bat. Though, thanks to the wonderful set of interior drapes placed over the important bits, we can’t tell you much more than this.

So, are we excited? Having just driven the G80 for a week, I’m excited to see how the G70 combines the fun of the Stinger GT with the refinement of the newer brand’s luxury designs.
